Elden Ring Weapons and Weapon Upgrades

Elden Ring Weapons and Weapon Upgrades

Elden Ring includes new Weapon categories, and some that are returning from previous Souls games. With the addition of Ashes of War, weapons can now be upgraded in a slightly different way as well.

Weapon Scaling & Requirements

Like previous From Software titles, weapons in Elden Ring require you to meet certain stat requirements in order to use the weapon effectively. If you do not meet the requirements for a Weapon, you won't be able to use its Weapon Skill. So plan ahead and find Weapons you can use efficiently.

Scaling is how much damage is added to a Weapon aligned with your investment in a specific Stat like Strength or Dexterity for example. Elden Ring also has this similar to the previous Souls games with "S" being the best Scaling, followed by "A", "B", "C", "D" and "E".

The bottom line is that the higher the letter, the more damage you can deal by investing in that particular stat. There might be more than one Scaling Stat for some equipment. Make sure you pay attention to which ones to invest in.

Weapon Upgrades

Weapon upgrades in Elden Ring can be done at the Smithing Table. It is currently located in the Church of Elleh. You can use Runes or Smithing Stone Shards that you have gathered to upgrade any weapon you find.

A Weapon is upgraded from its base version to the "+1" version. This indicates that it has been upgraded 1 time. This will increase the Weapon's damage and in some cases, it will improve the Weapon's overall scaling.

Weapon Skills and Ashes of War

Each weapon in Elden Ring comes with a Weapon Skills that can be accessed by pressing the L2 button. These Skills use FP. Each skill consumes different amounts depending on its relative power. You can "Charge" some Skills by holding L2, which allows them to use more FP but also increases their damage or effectiveness.

You can replace most of the Weapon Skills in Elden Ring by inserting an Ashes of War into them. This can be done at the Ashes of War Menu at a Site of Grace. This allows you to combine and match Skills with the Weapon that you like, but not all Ashes of War will work on all Weapons. Special weapons cannot be infused. (Just like Transposed Weapons in Dark Souls 3)

You can undo the Ashes of War at any time. Simply visit a Site of Grace to "Un-enchant" your Weapon. You can also replace it with another Ash of War, if desired.
