Outlast is a horror-themed game released by Red Barrels in 2013. In the basic logic of the game, there is the feeling of fear that the game gives because our character cannot use any weapon. In summary, the main purpose of the game is to complete the missions by progressing in linear levels.
- Guarantee for fear
- Very well-developed first-person view
- Lots of unexpected events
- Not very innovative
- A bit repetitive at times
Everything You Need to Know About Outlast
What is the plot of Outlast?
The story of Outlast begins with our character driving a car to the building where the story takes place to examine an old mental hospital in line with a task he receives. When our character reaches the front of the mental hospital, he realizes that the door is locked, and the door system is not working. However, the door next to the car entrance is open. Our character enters the garden of the mental hospital using the door. Meanwhile, he notices a silhouette watching him from the window. When our character looks again at the window with that silhouette, the silhouette has disappeared. From this point on, our character must find a way to get inside the mental hospital.
Game Mechanics
Control Keys
The basis of Outlast is to control our character with the control keys and to advance in areas with various puzzles and obstacles without being caught by the enemies. Since our character does not have any weapons, every enemy in the mental hospital means a mortal danger for him. In this process, the only equipment our character has is a handheld camera. My character must use the night vision mode of the camera he has to see around in dark areas. It causes the player to feel helpless and be wary of dangers. At this point, the game successfully conveys the feeling of fear of helplessness to the player.
Camera Battery
Another mechanic of the game is that the battery of the camera runs out. To extend the charging time of the camera in various regions in the game, you need to find a battery. This mechanic allows you to search around by preventing your rapid progress in the game. Thus, the player can examine both the atmosphere of the game and the interior designs. In addition, when your camera runs out of battery while escaping from an enemy in a dark area, it causes you to lose your way and get caught.
Exploration
One of the basic mechanics of the game is to explore the stage you are in and look for possible ways out. Thus, you try to complete that section by controlling each region in the game. There are also horror elements placed by the designers to increase the tension within the game. For example, a character sitting in a wheelchair can suddenly jump at you.
Is Outlast Worth Playing?
First, if you are familiar with horror games, this game will be a fun experience for you. The fact that the game was released in 2013 does not mean that the graphics quality of the game is bad. If you are afraid while playing Outlast, I can tell you that it will take you half an hour to get used to the tension of the game. The reason for this is that you get used to the mechanics of the game after you die a few times during the game. If you are looking for a game with a sense of exploration and jump scare, Outlast is the game designed for you!
