What Happened Before Alan Wake 2?
The world created by Alan Wake in his novels, also known as the dark place, is an alternative reality where art, fiction and even thoughts can become reality. The entrance to this world is located under Lake Cauldron. In this dimension, there is a creature known as the dark entity that wants to emerge into the real world. This creature can command people's fears and turn them into shadows.
In the first game, Alan Wake and his wife Alice went to Cauldron Lake for a holiday. However, the dark entity took advantage of Wake's creativity dragged Alice into the lake and began to deceive the townspeople. As a result of his long efforts, Alan Wake defeated the dark entity, liberated Alice, and the town, and sealed the dark entity.
Beginning of the Story
A series of strange murders begins to occur in the vicinity of Bright Falls, where bodies are found with their hearts removed. Saga Anderson and Alex Casey are assigned to investigate the incident and catch the killer. The duo is tasked with investigating the fourth and final victim, former FBI agent Robert Nightingale. Robert was killed by a group known as "The Cult of the Tree", which disappeared 13 years ago.
During the autopsy, they find a page with Robert that has the power to predict the future. While the two review Robert's autopsy results, Robert's body begins to move and escapes the morgue. The two-track Robert's body to Cauldron Lake and Saga is forced to kill his old friend Robert. With Robert's death, the waters of Lake Cauldron receded, and they found the worn-out Alan Wake washed up on the shore of the lake. The duo detains Alan Wake and take him to the field office. Alan Wake tells the duo about the dark place and how he escaped from there.
Dark Place
Alan Wake drafted a new novel called "Return" to Escape from the Dark Place. But this novel also turns into reality and begins to spread fear throughout the world. The reason the novel was brought to life is that Scratch, who believes in the magic of words, edited the draft of the novel. Scratch is a cult member who is trying to free the Dark Entity and is looking for the Clicker. The Clicker is the key to both releasing and permanently sealing the Dark Entity.
Saga Anderson tracks down Clicker and finds him, wanting to take him to Alan Wake. However, on the way, agents accompanied by Estevez arrest Clicker and the town. Left with no other choice, Saga begins tracking down Odin and Tor Anderson to learn more about Clicker. During the investigation, she learns that Odin and Tor are her uncle and grandfather, respectively. Since Saga inherited her uncle and grandfather's powers, she realizes that she can use the "Mind Place" technique to distinguish between reality and fiction.
Realizing that Alan Wake is trapped in the dark space, Saga asks for help from Alex, Odin, Tor, and Estevez to perform a ritual to summon him to the real world. Meanwhile, Wake, who wants to escape from the dark place, discovers that his wife Alice is tortured by nightmares and eventually commits suicide. In anger, Wake kills a version of himself that he considers evil. Meanwhile, Saga and his team, who finished the summoning ritual in the real world, fail to summon Wake. Instead of returning to the real world, Wake returns to the beginning of the entire story. Saga and his team realize that Alan Wake and Scratch are the same person, and that Wake is stuck in a loop because he blames himself for his wife's death.
